US National Parks

I am going to Zion next month. This will be the fourth national park I am visiting. This also makes me wonder how many national parks are there and where are they located. This week, I am visualizing all the national parks in the US.

My Visualization

I plotted the national parks on the map, with triangle size indicating the size of the parks.

Insights

  • California has the highest number of national parks (8 exclusive and 1 shared with Nevada), following by Alaska (8);
  • Wrangell–St. Elias in Alaska is the largest national park in the US;
  • Suprirsingly (at least to me), Great Smoky Mountains is the most visited park in 2021. This is probably because there are much fewer national parks in middle and east side of the US and the Great Smoky Mountains is the largest and most accessible one there.
