US 10 Largest Arlines On-time Flights %

This week I came across this US Airline Delay dataset on Kaggle (when I don’t have a specific dataset I am interested to visualize, I turn to Kaggle to get inspirations). It has data from 2003, with aggregated numbers of flight delays by month, by airline, and by reasons. Therefore, one can easily calculate the flight-level on-time rate by airlines. I picked the top 10 largest airlines in the US and plotted their comparative ranking of on-time rate.

My Visualization

To show the change in on-time flight rate ranking, I chose a bump chart in this case. You can also hover on the chart to see the actual rate.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • Overall, Hawaiian Airlines shows the highest on-time rate – however, it might not be a fair comparison as Hawaiian mainly operate between US mainland (especially westcoast) and Hawaii. So that could contribute to a lower delay chances;
  • Among the top 4 airlines operating across the US (and globally) – Detla, AA, UA, and SW – Delta has shown the best on-time flight rate consistently in the past 10 years;
  • You may notice the 2020 data seems a bit weird as it breaks many patterns (and if you hover on the chart, you will find the on-time rate for all airlines are way higher than other years) – this is largely due to the impact of the pandemic, which decreased air travel by a lot.
