Trail Mileage on State Lands in 1996 vs. 2013

Last weekend I went to Zion and hiked the Narrows trail. Hiking in a river is a very unique and fun experience (and exhausting). Threfore, Today, I decided to make a hiking theme visualization. I found a Hiking Trails in America report by American Hiking Society in 2015. It is a bit old, but still we can see how hiking habit has grown over time in the US. The data point I chose is the trail mileage on state lands in 1996 vs. 2013 on page 10.

My Visualization

Here I used Gantt plot to visualize the 1996 vs. 2013 trail mileage on state level, and sorted by 2013 mileage.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • In most states, we see a general trend of increase in trail mileage comparing 2013 with 1996, except a few outliers like Pennsylvania;
  • However, this could be due to inconsistent data source and changes in land ownership;
  • California in 2013 has the highest number of trail mileage of over 5k.
