Universal Theme Parks Revenue 2011-2021

I went to Universal Studio in LA last week and did all the rides! Last time I rode rollar coaster might be 10 years ago… Inspired by this, I decided to visualize the universal studio revenue this week. I went to the Comcast annual reports and found annual revenue from theme park from 2011 to 2021.

The visualization itself is very simple – a combined line and bar chart showing the annual revenue. And it looks like a rollar coaster! So I added two small cars at the start and end of the chart…

Insights

  • Universal theme parks revenue gradually climbed up and 3.5x-ed from 2011 to 2019 ($ 1,874M to $ 6,213M);
  • But as you can imagine, COVID impacted theme parks severely, and caused a negative EBITDA of $ -477M in 2020;
  • In 2021, with COVID getting better and the opening of Universal Studio in Beijing, the revenue bounced back to $ 5,051M, around the same level as in 2016.
