Median Age at First Marriage in America

This week I had a hard time finding a dataset to visualize. After one hour search on different websites, I turned to makeovermonday. It’s great to see this amazing project restarted earlier this year in Aug and I finally found one dataset there that is interesting to visualize - median age of women at first marriage in different states. The original data comes from prb.org.

My Visualization

I feel I have used this visualization type quite a few times this year – I used gantt + dot plot to show the changes in median age at marriage by state level.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • The median age at first marriage is very different in different states - Utah shows the lowest age of 24.6 in the 2015-2019 survey data (which is likely religion-related), while D.C. shows the highest age of 30.6;
  • Meanwhile, it is very interesting at in all states, we see an increase in the median age of women at first marriage across all the states consistently, spanning from 0.3 years to almost 3 years.
