How Americans Perceive Demographics

This week’s dataset comes from MakeoverMonday. It is about an interesting survey conducted by YouGov about how Americans perceive demographics. It is sometimes surprising how much people could overestimate the size of a minority group.

My Visualization

The visualization is (again) a two layer chart with gantt chart + bubbles. The questions are grouped by the topics.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • Among all the topics, it appears that Americans tend to overestimate the smaller groups, while underestimate the larger groups (like White people / Christan / 25k+ income);
  • In other words, in people’s perception, the world might be more evenly distributed;
  • The original article provided some interesting assumptions behind it.
