Github Hottest Topics & Their Top 120 Repos

This week, I found this dataset on Kaggle that scrapped github topics to get the top 120 starred repos in each topic. This is an interesting dataset to understand what are the hottest open-source topics on Github.

My Visualization

As this dataset is about Github, I tried to make it more Github style, i.e. different shades of green squares :) Each green square represent one repo, and the more stars it gets, the greener it is.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

• javascript so far shows highest interests on Github, measured by the median # of stars among its top 120 repos – some of the famous open-source repos are react and vue;
• hacktoberfest is the 2nd hottest topic on the list, as it is a month-long celebration of open-source projects, their maintainers, and the entire community of contributors, so makes sense the repos under this topic are by its definition the most popular ones;
• One interesting observation is that, while the majority of the top repos are great open-source projects, some of them are actually repos for coding guidance / learning materials / examples, as every day, there are more and more people learning how to code.
