How Much Do Americans Spend On Christmas?
Happy holidays! This week, I found a dataset on MakeoverMonday about how much do Americans spend on Christmas. The original article is very rich in stats, including total spend over time, avg gift spend by recipient, personal gift spending trend, comparisons with other countries, etc.
My Visualization
The visualization I made this time focuses on the metric of avg gift spending by gift recipient. I used a simple line chart with colors and sizes differentiating the recipients.
Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.
Insights
- From 2004 to 2021, despite the inflation, the avg gift spending for friends and coworkers remained relatively stable, and the spending on other gifts even decreased from ~$40 to $30;
- Meanwhile, family gift spending increased steadily from $405 in 2004 to $514 in 2021 (+25%), driving most of the gift spending increases.
