American’s Trust in Mass Media is Declining Over Time

This week, I found this report from Gallup on American’s trust in media. It has many interesting data points like American’s overall trust in mass media, differences by age group, political ideology, education, etc.

Insights

  • Generally speaking, we are seeing American’s trust in mass media keeps declining over time, since 1997;
  • There were two significant drop in the % of people responded ‘a great deal / fair amount’ – once in 2004 (right after the Iraq invasion), another in 2016 (could be related to the election);
  • In the most recent survey in 2022, over 65% of the respondents said they have ‘not very much’ or ‘none at all’ trust in mass media.
