San Francisco Weekly Precipitation

The Bay Area has seen pretty extreme weather this winter. During the year-end holiday season, we had crazy rainfall, and last week we even got some snow! Therefore, this week, I am looking at the precipitation data in Downtown San Francisco since 2000. The data can be downloaded here.

My Visualization

This week’s visualization took me a long time to create and adjust… I bucketed precipitation into weekly total, then used cos and sin functions to transform the total precipitation numbers into coordinates on the 2-dimensional plate. The further the point is from the center, the higher the weekly precipitation.

Insights

  • First, looking at the seasonal pattern, it’s clear that raining season in San francisco is usually the winter months (Nov to March), but we barely get any rain in the summer;
  • Looking at this winter, we got higher than average precipitation during the holiday weeks, especially in the last week of 2022, we got 8.04 inches precipitation in total, which is ~50% higher than the highest precipitation since 2000 (5.43 inches in 2004).
