Do Millennials Own or Rent Home

My rent is expiring again next month… Owning a home or renting an apartment is always an important question in life. This week, I came across this report by RentCafe, highlightling how Millennials made historic switch from renter-majority to homeowner-majority generation. This report has lots of data points, while my visualization focuses on homeowner vs. renter % in 110 metro areas.

Insights

  • It’s pretty clear that in metro areas with higher housing price, fewer millenials are homeowners. For example, in San Fracisco, it is only 37%, and in San Jose, it is even lower at 23%.
  • Meanwhile, we see more millenials homeowners in Texas, Florida, and mid west.
