Top US Credit Cards Issuers
I am considering opening a new credit card recently. Therefore, this week, I am looking at a very relevant data – top credit card issuers in the US. The data comes from this article, ranking the top issuers by purchase volume.

The chart is a simple bump chart, showing the rank between 2016 to 2021. You can hover on the dots to see the tooltip.

Insights
- Overall, the credit issuer ranking has been relatively stable between 2016 to 2021;
- Chase and Amex are the top 2, with Chase surpassing Amex in 2020, likely with its popular cards like CSR/CSP (Sapphires), CFU/CFF (Freedom) – I feel most of my friend have at least one or two of them;
- Citi has always been in the 3rd place, with Capital One and BOA competing 4th and 5th places;
- Followed by them are smaller but un-neglectable players like Discover (my first card), US Bank and Wells Fargo.
