Cities with the Best Work-Life Balance 2022

This week, I came across this dataset from kisi, using 19 factors from work intensity, society and institutions, and city liveability to quantify the work-life balance from 100 cities across the world (51 US cities and 49 global cities). It provides a very comprehensive view of WLB measures. Therefore, I decided to make a visualization of it.

My Visualization

First, I processed the data to make all the factor scores scaling from 0 to 1 by applying (score - min)/(max-min), and adjusted the score directions so that higher score always is better in terms of work life balance (except for ‘Multiple Jobholders’, as I really don’t know if which direction is better lol). For the visualization part, I created a scatter plot for each factor and highlight the city currently selected. You can select any dots on the scatter plots to change the city selection.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • We see the countries in Northern Europe on the top of the list as they perform pretty well across the board;
  • Looking at SF specifically (where I am located), the areas that it needs to improve are high overworked population, low vacation offered, low paid parental leave, unsatisfied healthcare, not so good affordability, and bad city safety.
