Students Reading For Fun

This week, I am visualizing the data from the NAEP long-term trend assessment results. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) administered the NAEP long-term trend (LTT) reading and mathematics assessments to 13-year-old students every few years. One of the interesting data points on the report is how often the students read for fun on their own time. It buckets the students by their reading frequency over time from the previous assessments.

Insights

  • The students who reported reading for fun almost every day or once or twice a week have been declining over time – both bucket were as high as 35% in 1985, but they only adding up to 36% now;
  • Meanwhile, the students reported never or hardly ever read have increased from 8% to 31% alone;
  • This could be due to the development in the modern technologies and the change in life style as a result – students are spending more and more time on electronic devices (games, social media, videos, etc.).
