Attitudes Towards AI-based Text Generation

This week, I am visualizing another survey data around the recent hype of AI. The data comes from this report on YouGov. It has several charts showing people’s perceptions and attitudes toward AI. I would definitely recommend checking out this article, if you are interested in the AI topic. The data I chose specifically for visualization is US adults’ responses to ‘Do you think that advancements in AI-based text generation will overall be a good or a bad thing for society?’. This is 100% a controversial question, but I am also surprised to see the differences across different demographics.

My Visualization

The visualization is a simple grouped bar chart. I did not make it into a stacked bar chart just so that it’s easier to compare different responses.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • Overall, we see much more people in the US believe AI-based text generation will be bad for society (36%), compared to those who think it will be good for society (13%);
  • But the attitude varies significantly across different demographic groups. Generally speaking, women are more concerned about AI-based text generation than men, and younger adults are more optimistic than older adults.
