AI Exposure and Wage

This week, I found a report by Pew Research Center on Which U.S. Workers Are More Exposed to AI on Their Jobs. This is a very insightful report with many data points on AI exposure across different industries and correlation with work salary. The data I am visualizing this week is the average hourly earnings of U.S. workers in jobs most or least exposed to AI. It shows the earning differences by AI exposure and different demographic groups.

My Visualization

This visualization is a gantt chart with different color coding on least and most AI exposure.

Insights

  • Across all demographics groups, we see much higher wages (1.5x-2x) from the people exposed to AI at work;
  • However, the wage gap has high variance across the different groups – Asian and higher-degree workers with AI-exposure at work show the highest wage, potentially biased by the industries they are in, while the wage gap across age groups older than 35 are very similar to each other.
