Energy Use Per Person 1965-2022

This week, I went to makeovermonday.co.uk for some visualization dataset inspiration, and decided to play with the energy use per person dataset they shared for the week of 08/14. The dataset was originally from “Our World in Data”, and you can select to compare different countries or regions. For my visualization, I chose to show the energy per capita change by continent vs. world average, from 1965 to 2022.

This visualization is simple as it plots each continent trends side by side, with a slightly thicker line for world average for reference.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • North America, Oceania and Euorpe mostly consist of developed countries with easy access to energy, thus their energy use per capital is way higher than the other continent and the world average since 1965; But it’s good to see a decline in all the three continents, potentially indicating efforts in energy saving and using more clean energy.
  • On the other side, we see the energy use per capital grew 7x in the past 57 years, with the economic development; But for Africa, the number has been relatively flat over time.
