U.S. Adults’ View on Alcohol

This week I was browsing through Gallup’s website searching for a dataset to visualize, and found this interesting research on how U.S. adults’ views on drinking have changed over time. I picked one table about people’s views on alcohol vs. other recreational and medicinal substances of consumption in the report and made a visualization on it.

This visualization is a bar chart, but I used a Gantt chart in Tableau to better position and align the bars and headers.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

• Nicotine-based products like cigarettes and tobacco are viewed as very or somewhat harmful by the majority of U.S. adults;
• While Alcohol is less concerned by U.S. adults than nicotine-based products, interestingly, it is considered more harmful than Marijuana.
