U.S. Personal Savings Rate

This week’s data I am visualizing is the personal saving rate in the U.S. FRED has the monthly trend of this metric. The recent trend since the pandemic is really interesting.

This visualization is pretty simple with a reference band highlighting the changes since the pandemic.

Insights

  • Before the pandemic, U.S. personal savings rate has been gradually going up from from 5% to 8%;
  • However, at the beginning of the pandemic (April 2020), this rate surged dramatically to 33.8%, mostly because of the lockdowns, which decreased household spending;
  • But this trend did not last long – It decreased all the way to ~3% from 2021, likely due to the inflation and spending increase after the pandemic.
