Average Bedtime by Country

I usually sleep late during the weekends, and end up getting up around noon. Curious about what is the typical bedtime around the world, this week I am visualizing the avereage bedtime data from World Population Review. It has average bedtime and wakeup time, as well as average mins in bed. However, please note that this data is a bit old as it’s from 2015.

My Visualization

The visualization has two parts: on the upper left, I have a bar chart showing average mins in bed; on the right, the large circle represents the average bedtime and wakeup time by country. You can select a country using the filter or click on any of the chart to highlight a country.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • Although some research says adults should have at least 7 hours’ sleep, among the 50 countries available in this data, only 19 of them have an average time in bed longer than 7 hours;
  • It’s also interesting that in 36 of the 50 countries, average bedtime is later than 12 AM;
  • The most common wakeup time is around 7:30 AM.
