Most Popular Languages Worldwide
I have been using Duolingo to learn foreign languages for almost 1000 days now. This week, I found a report online with all sorts of statistics about languages. The dataset I am visualizing this week is the table listing various languages used as first and second languages by the world population.
My Visualization
The visualization is a simple three-column bar chart showing the # of people who speak the languages as their first language, as the second language, and total.
Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.
Insights
- English is by far the language spoken by the highest # of people. Over 1 billion people speak English as their 2nd language, which is 4x the population of the 2nd popular 2nd language.
- However, it is not the language with the most native speakers – both Mandarin and Spanish have more native speakers.
