Wikipedia User Edits 2001-2023

The dataset I am looking at this week is also related to language. The Wikimedia Statistics website offers a nice view of engagement metrics on Wikipedia, including unique devices, user edits, new users, etc. I decided to download the user edits data for different languages and make a visualization of it to show the enrichment of Wikipedia content in the most popular languages.

My Visualization

The visualization is a simple line chart. But on the top, you can click on a language label to hide the lines of other languages.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • User edits in English are by far the highest, 5x higher than the second popular language, which is French;
  • The number of User edits in English increased exponentially since the initial launch of Wikipedia, and reached its peak around 2007, then stayed at a relatively stable level since then;
  • Frech and Spanish contents have the 2nd and 3rd highest user edits, and their user edits also have stabilized since 2007;
  • Meanwhile, the user edits in Chinese is still roughly increasing linearly every month, indicating more and more content is being added/translated into Chinese.
