USCIS Median Processing Time

There are over 500k H1B Visa holders in the US today and many of them are on the way applying/waiting for their Green Card (I am one of them). Today, I found the official median processing time data on USCIS website and decided to make a viz (to lessen my anxiety a bit).

My Visualization

The visualization is a simple heatmap with color coding on the processing months. I only included the forms that one would likely interact with from an H1B worker to a Green Card holder.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • I-129 and I-140 forms have the option of premium processing (PP), which significantly decrease the processing time. Therefore, if you can afford the cost of PP or your employer sponsors it, you should definitly do it;
  • However, the form I-485 takes the longest time but has no option to PP. It looks like its processing time is on a decreasing trend in the past 3 fiscal years and hopefully this continues.
