International Visitors to Japan

Japan has been on my travel list for a long time and I am finally going to Japan this year! Therefore, this week, I decided to make some visualization around Japan tourism statistics. The dataset I am using is posted by Japan National Tourism Organization on international visitors to Japan by country/region.

My Visualization

This visualization is a bump chart of top 10 country/regions by visitors to Japan every year. You can hover on the circles to view the actual visitor numbers.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • Most of the countries/regions on the top 10 list are from Asia, which makes a lot of sense as it’s much closer for them to travel to Japan;
  • China used to have the highest number of visitors to Japan before 2022, but in the most recent two years, it was surpassed by South Korea;
  • The rank from 2017 to 2019 was rather stable, but we see more much changes since 2020 – this is likely caused by the pandemic. If you look at the actual visitor #, the number between 2020 and 2022 was way lower than before across all the countries. I have to admit that the bump chart removes lots of useful information on the absolute numbers but only keeps the ranking;
  • The US is probably the farthest country on the list by geographical distance, and its ranking has increased over time.
