Foreign Tourists to Japan by Number of Visits

I am going to Japan soon (yay)! Therefore, this week I am exploring and visualizing the datasets on Japan Tourism Statistics Website. The one I picked is the foreign visitors by their number of visits to Japan. It is interesting to see the differences across the nationality of tourists.

My Visualization

I used the Gantt plot to draw a cumulative bar chart and put the top 4 countries side by side for comparison.

Insights

• Overall, only a bit over 1/3 of the foreign tourists are 1st time visitors, and 12% of tourists have been to Japan more than 10 times;
• This number varies a lot across markets – There are way higher % of returning visitors from South Korea and Taiwan; But for visitors from China and US, more than half of them are 1st time visitors to Japan.
