McDonald’s Nutrition Facts
I am writing an article on some less common but useful visualization types. I plan to use my own Tableau visualization as examples, so I looked for a dataset to create a Radar Chart. Therefore, I browsed the datasets on Kaggle today and found the Fast Food Nutrition dataset. It contains the nutrition facts of the food at six popular fast food chains and it’s a perfect dataset for a radar chart.
My Visualization
The radar chart has right dimensions, representing calorie value and seven nutrients. Since each nutrients have different scales and units, I plotted the chart with the relative value to the maximum of each dimension. You can find the five reference lines (20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% to their maximum) and their values by hovering on the lines.
Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.
Insights
- The item at McDonald’s with the highest calorie in this dataset is the Chocolate Triple Thick Shake. It also has the highest grams of carbs (and sugars) among all the items – 203g, which is almost all the carbs you should intake daily. This is something you should probably avoid to eat if you are trying to reduce weight.
- Meanwhile, looking at the nutrition facts of a Hamburger, it contains 250 calories with 31g carb (6g sugars), 12g protein and 9g total fat. This is a much more balanced nutrition composition (though still slightly higher on carbs as it contributed to 47% of the total energy intake).
