US Earthquakes 2024

Last Friday morning, I was in a meeting, and suddenly my phone started beeping with a Tsunami warning. I think this is the first time ever receiving a Tsunami warning…. It turned out there was an Earthquake in the Pacific Ocean, which triggered this warning. And fortunately, it was cancelled about 30 mins later. We all know that earthquake is a real threaten to California. Therefore, this week, I downloaded the earthquakes data in the US this year from USGS to create a visualization.

This is a classic map visualization, with the size of the bubbles indicating the earthquake magnitude. You can filter on magnitude using the slider on the upper right and see more details in the tooltip.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

• US West Coast lies at the boundary of active tectonic plates, thus has higher number of earthquakes, especially in Washington state (Cascadia Subduction Zone), California (San Andreas Fault System), and Nevada (Walker Lane Seismic Zone).
