I just went to Europe for my holiday trip. Given my flight was 12/24, the airport wasn’t too busy. This makes me wonder when usually is the busiest time for air travel in the US. Therefore, I downloaded the TSA checkpoint travel numbers data from the TSA website and made a visualization.

My Visualization

This visualization is fairly straightforward with two colored lines representing the 2023 and 2024 daily travel numbers. Please note that the 2023 line wasn’t aligned on the same exact date, but the same weekly to match the weekly seasonality better.

Insights

• We see higher traveler numbers thoughout 2024, compared with 2023;
• Both years follow a similar pattern – there are fewer travelers in the beginning of the year (Jan and Feb), but peaks during the summer months (Jun to Aug).
