Time Spent on Activities

For the first visualization of 2025, let’s look at how much time people spend on their hobbies. The data comes from The Economics Daily from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. It shows the average hours spent daily on hobbies including watching TV, sports, arts, games, etc in 2022 vs. 2023.

This visualization is a gantt plot, showing the changes between 2022 and 2023, and sorted by the 2023 average.

Insights

  • Among those who watch TV, their average time spent is as long as 3.6 hours daily in both 2022 and 2023, much longer than people who engage with other activities;
  • Time spent on most hobbies are consistent in 2022 and 2023, but we see a significant decrease in time spent on arts and entertainment (3.08 hours to 2.65 hours) and volunteer activities (2.33 hours to 2.11 hours).
