US Overseas Visitors

I have looked at tourism data to Japan and Europe, but not to the US (as I live in the US myself). Therefore, this week I decided to look at popular travel destinations in the US among international tourists. The data comes from International Trade Administration. It provides tourism data to each US states and top cities.

My Visualization

This visualization is a Hex map – It plots US states in hexagons with the color representing the tourist volume. The advantage of a Hex map over a regular map is that all the states are represented with the same size and shape while maintaining the relative locations, ensuring the focus is on the data values rather than geographic size or distances. Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • The most popular US states among international tourists are New York (29%), Florida (25%), and California (20%) – three states got 74% of the overseas visitors.
