Chinese New Year Red Pocket Amount

Chinese New Year is coming! I am also back in China to celebrate Chinese New Year with my parents (after 5 years). Speaking of the traditions during Chinese New Year, the most famous one is probably Red Pocket. Chinese people give away small amount of cash in red envelops to children (mostly) as a good wish for the new year. This week, my visualization is based on a survey of the average Red Pocket amount in 2024. It has data by major regions in China for comparison.

My Visualization

This visualization is a heatmap (made with Gantt plot for extra spaces between cells) with the color representing the % of respondents giving the corresponding amount in their red pockets.

Insights

  • In most regions in China, ¥100-300 is the most common size of the red pockets, followed by ¥300-500.
  • However, Northeast China has a longer tail of red pocket amount – they have a lower percentage of people giving ¥300-500, but the highest percentage of people giving more than ¥1000 in the red pockets, probably a cultural differences;
  • Meanwhile, South China appear to be the region giving away relatively lower amount of money in the red pockets.
