US Eggs vs. Milk Prices
Egg prices have soared over 60% in the US in the last year. I have seen many people complaining online. Wondering if this is part of the general inflation or something specific to eggs, I decided to visualize egg prices trend in the past 30 years, with milk prices showing on the same chart for comparison.
My Visualization
This visualization is a simple line chart with two lines representing egg prices and milk prices separately.

Insights
- Egg prices have seen more fluctuation since 2022. Egg prices grew slowly from 1995 to 2022, following a similar trend as milk prices. However, it soared from $1.93 per dozen in Jan 2022 to $4.82 per dozen in Jan 2023. Though it went down significantly to $2.04 per dozen in Aug 2023, it went up another 60% to $4.15 per dozen in Dec 2024. This is due to an ongoing outbreak of avian flu in 2022 (which was detected again lately), together with challenging supply chain issues.
