SWE Total Compensation - AI/ML vs. Not

I came across an annual salary report by Levels.fyi. One interesting thing that caught my eye was the comparison of Software Engineer total compensation between AI/ML vs. other functions (LinkedIn Post). Therefore, I decided to make a visualization in my style using the same data.

This chart is made via a Gantt chart in Tableau, showing the total compensation of AI/ML and other functions while highlighting the size of the difference.

Insights

• Across all the levels of Software Engineer, we see the same pattern of those focusing on AI/ML having a higher median total compensation.
• The difference becomes larger with the growth of the level – of course, total compensation data tends to show a higher variance at higher levels given the limited data points, but this could also be due to a lack of high-level AI experts.
