Average Tariff Rate 1900-2024

In the past week, the new tariff proposal has been shaking the stock market. For this week’s visualization, I am visualizing the historical tariff rates from 1900 to 2024.

Insights

  • Overall, the tariff rates are on a clear downward trend in the last century;
  • However, there were multiple spikes in the history – there was one increase around 1930s due to the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act, another one in 1960s post-WWII, and a more recent uptick around 2018–2020, aligning with the US-China trade war and new tariffs under the first Trump administration.
