What U.S. Teens Think About Social Media

The dataset I am visualizing this week is U.S. teens’ attitudes towards social media. This is from a survey that Pew Research Center conducted, asking U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 if social media hurts or helps friendships/confidence/mental health/grades/productivity/amount of sleep.

My Visualization

My visualization is very similar to the original visualization posted on Pew Research Center – it is a special variation of bar chart with “hurts” and “helps” on the two opposite directions aligning on the same 0-axis.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • More teens think that social media helps friendship than hurts;
  • Meanwhile, almost half of the teens agree that social media hurts the amount of sleep.
