Top 10 Busiest Airports Worldwide 2009-2024

My visualization this week is the busiest airports in the world (Wikipedia). It measures the airports with the highest number of passengers each year. I picked 2024, 2019, 2014 and 2009 to show the trend in the last 20 years.

The visualization is a bump chart with the top 10 airports. The colors show the countries where the airports are located in.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • ATL (Atlanta airport) has consistently been the busiest airport in the world in the past 20 years;
  • 40% of the top 10 airports are located in the U.S., though LAX falls off the top 10 list while DEN pops up in 2024;
  • HND (Haneda airport) in Japan kept its position firmly in top 5, while DXB (Dubai aiport) is an emerging airport which climbed up to 2nd place in 2024.
