Top 15 U.S. College Major by Unemployment Rate
The dataset I am visualizing this week is the labor market for recent college graduates data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. It shows the employment outcomes, including the unemployment rate, underemployment rate, and median wage, by college majors. Please note the Figures are for 2023. Unemployment and underemployment rates are for recent college graduates (that is, those aged 22 to 27 with a bachelor’s degree or higher), and median wages are for full-time workers with a bachelor’s degree only. Early career graduates are those aged 22 to 27, and mid-career graduates are those aged 35 to 45.
My Visualization
This visualization includes two metrics: unemployment rates on the left as a bar chart, and median wage mid-career, displayed as text with color-coded wage amounts.
Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.
Insights
- The college major with the lowest unemployment rate is Nutrition Science (0.44%). And there are only three majors with unemployment lower than 1%.
- However, a lower unemployment rate does not indicate a higher wage – among the top 15 majors with the lowest unemployment rates, aerospace engineering has the highest mid-career median wage at $125k.
