US Top 1% Income

A new year started, which means another tax season is coming. This week, the dataset I visualized is the top 1% income by states in 2025 based on IRS tax return data. The original dataset comes from smartasset.

My Visualization

I used a hex map to show income by states in a more compact way.

Please note that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • Connecticut is the only state where it takes more than $1 million to be a top 1% earner. This is likely because it concentrates extremely high-paying finance and executive jobs next to New York City, combined with a small population and a very top-heavy income distribution;
  • Generally speaking, states on the west and east coasts have higher income floor to be a top 1% earner.
