Weekly Viz 2021-08-02
Bike Collisions in London (2005-2019)
About Makeover Monday
MakeoverMonday is a social data project: “Each week we post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you rework the chart. Maybe you retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data. We’re curious to see the different approaches you all take. Whether it’s a simple bar chart or an elaborate infographic, we encourage everyone of all skills to partake. Together we can have broader conversations about and with data.”
Starting from Jan 08, 2018, I decided to put aside one hour on Monday weekly to create some visualization and find some insights from the data.
The datasets are published each week at: MakeoverMonday Datasets.
Makeover Monday 20210802
This week we are looking at bank collisions in London from 2005 to 2019. The dataset is pretty large and the original dashboard plots all the collisions on the map, but it’s a bit hard to see due to the volume.
My Visualization
I also plot the collisions on the map, with monthly trend and weekday x hour heatmap which can also serve as the filters.

Insights
- Overall, we see most collissions in summer months (May to Oct) and during commute hours (6-9 & 17-19) on weekdays, which align with the overall bike traffic volume;
- Regarding the fatality accident rate, we see a steady decline from 2005 (0.76%) to to 2010 (0.25%), and has been ~0.25% since then;
- Among the busist season (May to Oct), the fatality rate is actually lower than other months, both due to the volume and potentially weather condition.
