This week’s visualization is a dataset of top 50 populated cities and their population from 1975 to 2000, 2025, and 2050. The original visualization is published on Voronoi.
My Visualization
I visualized this dataset in a circle, where the four layers represent the years and each dot is the population of a city in that year. It is sorted by the population projection in 2050.
Insights
- Half (26/50) of the top populated cities in the world are located in Asia;
- The population rank has shifted over time to South and Southeast Asia countries – for example, Osaka (Japan) was ranked 2nd and NYC was ranked in 3rd in 1975, but their populations will be ranked beyond 20th places in 2050. Meanwhile, New Delhi was ranked 17th and Karachi was ranked 22nd in 1975, but will be 4th and 5th places in 2050.
