Bay Area Information Industry Employment

This week I browsed the California Open Data Portal and found a dataset of employment stats in all CA counties over time. I decided to zoom into the ‘information’ industry, which is the ‘representative’ industry of the bay area.

My Visualization

The visualization is a single line chart with color differences on the top 4 counties.

Please notice that all the visualizations are designed for desktop view, so it is recommended to view them on a desktop device.

Insights

  • Santa Clara county has the highest employment in the information industry in the bay area. The employment has been going up consistently between 2014 and 2020, but has been stagnant since the pandemic and even seen a decrease in 2022 (potentially related to the layoffs);
  • In San Francisco and San Mateo counties, employment in the information industry overall has been trending up in the past 10 years. At the beginning of COVID, we see the gap between the two counties narrowing down, likely due to people moving out from SF to San Mateo with the remote working policies being adopted widely.
