US Recorded Music Revenue

This week I saw the US Recorded Music Industry Revenue chart on the Chartr newsletter. This is a pretty cool dataset demonstrating how the music formats have been trending over time. Therefore, I downloaded the source data and made my own version of visualization.

My Visualization

This visualization is a set of area charts showing each format’s revenue over time.

Insights

  • LP/EP was the dominant music format with the highest revenue before 1980, but its place was taken by Cassette in 1980s, then by CD in 2000s;
  • CD was very popular for a long time for over 20+ years, but paid subscription gradually gained its popularity in the past 10 years.
